Do you need to share a CD and DVD drive with multiple Macs?

DVD DRIVE

It is not the first time that we have explained to you how to "share" in OSX, whether it be the screen, the printer, remote management or, in the case that concerns us today, the external CD-DVD drive or not.

It is clear that the reign of CD-DVD readers and currently other formats such as Blu-Ray are in disuse and in the case of Apple, only the MacBook Pro remains, since the rest of the company's computers already lack CD-DVD drive. In order to have a unit of this type in these computers we will have to have an external one.

In this case, I have a unit that Apple sells, the SuperDrive. It is a unit made entirely of aluminum with the same finish as the rest of the company's computers. The fact is that this week I had the need to share the unit with several Macs in a training course that I had to give to teachers at my school.

I got down to business and shared the drive with the Macs, so that each of them could have access to the information on the disk. It is clear that another solution is to create an image of the disk and then share it with a pendrive to each of them, but in this case, to teach those present I did it by sharing the unit.

To do this, follow the following steps:

  • Connect the unit to your computer, because until you connect it, it will not appear in the selection list in the Sharing section.

NO EXISTENCE OF UNIT

  • Once connected, we go to System Preferences and enter the sharing section. You will see that the unit already appears in the list.

CONNECTED UNIT

  • Now you just have to select it so that it is already shared between all the computers that are connected to the same WiFi. You can also select if you want the system to ask you every time a user wants to access that unit.

As you can see, the philosophy is identical to the one we show you in a previous post on how to share the internet with a Mac, but in this case to share a CD and DVD drive
