SPORE for Mac is the one for Windows emulated with Cider

Yes sir, the EA games are sloppy and try to tease us by saying that they have released a game for Mac. Well, it seems that they have taken the entire Windows executable and placed it in a bundle that contains a routine called cider. For those who do not know, cider is a Windows emulator such as the famous wine in Linux or CrossOver based on wine.

Some time ago they released an update that when installing it mentions typical windows paths in its dialog box such as "drive_c / windows / system32 /" and things like that.

We also get a nice "Exception Raised" like this:

This update completely unstabilizes the game making it unusable, in addition, after the installation of this patch, the Spore preferences become corrupted and stop working (or are upgraded being invalid for the version that comes with the DVD) even if you reinstall the game so I will count in steps how I have fixed it and returned it to its original condition.

• First we reinstall from the game DVD thus crushing the corrupt app.
• save a copy of everything inside "your user ~ / Library / Preferences / SPORE Preferences / p_drive / User / Application Data / Spore / Games /"
• Delete the entire "your user ~ / Library / Preferences / SPORE Preferences" folder
• run spore, license it, log in and when the galaxy screen comes out with the new games, you exit Spore.
• copy now what you have saved to ~ / Library / Preferences / SPORE Preferences / p_drive / User / Application Data / Spore / Games /

Now Spore works again with your saves intact. In the EA forums there is no solution to this and there are many cases like mine, that is, it is a generalized error for many macs, I do not know if all. It has already happened to me on the MacBook Pro and on this iMac.

Note: Never update Spore until something is known from the perpetrators at EA Games.

PS: If you have Time machine you can try to restore both the game app and the preferences, it will surely work. I have not been able to do that because between the day I crashed the game and now that I have thought about fixing it I changed my copy of time machine and I no longer have the old one.
