Basically the LaunchBar application sticks to a universal search bar very much in the style of what it will be Spotlight in OS X Yosemite but with some additions that make it more complete if possible. Currently, little by little the idea of searching everything manually is being discarded when we can carry out more exhaustive searches and even be able to open other applications associated with those searches with just a keyboard combination.
LaunchBar 6 improves the experience of the previous version by introducing the aforementioned search bar with a larger format, with a more visible text and located near the center of the screen instead of at the top, below the menu bar so now everything is more direct if possible, this application has definitely earned a position to compete in you to you in many ways with Alfred 2.
For example one of the many actions that we can carry out would be to select any file or text, press the key combination To activate LaunchBar, drag said content to the bar and with the combination of keys that we have predefined to be able to send them directly as an attachment in a new email.
One difference between LaunchBar and Alfred is that LaunchBar has a slightly broader set of built-in actions and extensions for specific applications and that's why LaunchBar makes it a little easier to execute those actions on specific content, things such as adding new calendar entries, reminders or tagging files in Mavericks. LaunchBar also makes navigation a bit more agile, that is, if a text file is selected, the right arrow can be used to examine each line of the file separately, something very useful. On the other hand I also like that it is able to activate the Automator system services and workflows through the LaunchBar.
The application can be downloaded exclusively from the developer's website as there is no version available for the Mac App Store. The price per individual license is 24 Euros down to 15 Euros if we come from a previous version.
