The Illustrated History of Mac OS X

The Illustrated History of Mac OS X is a cool idea created by the Fournova software studio that follows the development of the operating system of Apple from Mac OS X 10.0 Cheetah to the current Mac OS X 10.10 Yosemite through some more than original and creative illustrations that we present below.

Mac OS X 10.0 Cheetah (03/2001)

The history of OS X started with a bear, not a cat: in September 2000, Apple introduced Kodiak. For $ 30, users could buy this first public beta of Mac OS 10. But the official OS 10.0, Cheetah, arrived 6 months later. It featured a completely new user interface, Aquamarine, and early versions of applications like TextEdit, Preview, Mail, and QuickTime. The new OS X demanded the "whopping" in those days of 128 MB of RAM and 800 MB of disk space.

Mac OS X 10.1 Cougar (09/2001)

Just half a year later, Apple launched Puma which, instead of delivering many new features, focused on improving system performance. With Mac OS 10.1.2Apple also began integrating OS X by default with new computers, replacing OS 9 forever.

Mac OS X 10.2 Jaguar (08/2002)

OS X Jaguar introduced new applications such as iChat and the address book. It also introduced universal access, a component that made OS X more useful for people with visual and hearing impairments or physical disabilities. On top of that, OS X 10.2 featured a new startup screen - the Happy Mac "happy" logo was replaced with the fruity new icon. Apple .

Mac OS X 10.3 Panther (10/2003)

As pointed out from the study fournova, creators of this Illustrated History of Mac OS XMicrosoft must have had mixed feelings with Panther: For one thing, Internet Explorer for Mac was replaced by the new Safari as the default web browser. On the other hand, OS X 10.3 brought many interoperability improvements with Microsoft Windows. What's more, Apple introduced Exposé to improve working with multiple open applications.

Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger (04/2005)

Tiger brought Spotlight search to Mac OS X. It was also the first version to feature Widgets (such as a calculator, calendar, or clock) in the new Dashboard. Besides that, Mac OS 10.4 inaugurated new hardware: it was installed on both the first Macs with Intel processors and the first Apple TV devices (which were yet to come later, in 2007).

Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard (10/2007)

No other Mac OS it had taken so long to arrive. Nevertheless, Apple I had been busy developing and releasing iOS and iPhone in the meantime ...

The new leopard, however, introduced an integrated backup system called Time Machine. It also brought full support for 64-bit applications. On the other hand, Mac computers could now run other operating systems like Microsoft Windows thanks to Boot Camp.

Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard (08/2009)

Mac OS X 10.7 Lion (07/2011)

The king of all cats, Lion, was the first version of Mac OS it was not available on physical CD or DVD media. The operating system was available exclusively through the Mac App Store and already collected many ideas from iOS: Gestures, Launchpad, restoration window ...

Mac OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion (07/2012)

Mountain Lion brought even more successful iOS concepts to the Mac: a new Messages app to replace iChat, the Reminders app, and the Notification Center. Even before the introduction of OS 10.8, Apple made a big announcement committing to an annual update cycle for new versions of Mac OS.

Mac OS X 10.9 Mavericks (10/2013)

Mac OS X 10.10 Yosemite (10/2014)

The biggest design change in years came with Mac OS 10.10 Yosemite which follows its little brother iOS with a flatter look and blurred transparency effects.

With the new functionality Handoff, users are able to move seamlessly between devices, even during individual tasks. Apple it also emphasizes its Full Screen Mode function that is now activated through the traditional green button in the window's title bar.
