How to install OS X El Capitan from scratch

the-captain-installs-1

We already have here the new version of OS X El Capitan 10.11 and many of you still have the hesitate to upgrade or install from scratch This new version of the operating system for Mac. What we are going to show in this tutorial is how to install El Capitan from scratch on our Mac, but I repeat, this is not an essential requirement and it can be updated on top of our OS X Yosemite without further ado.

In my case, due to the many tests I do for the blog and others, I usually make updates from scratch when we jump from one operating system to another. Be careful, not in each update that Apple releases type 10.10.3 to 10.10.4, if not in jumps like today's from OS X Yosemite to OS X El Capitan. This usually comes in handy for my Mac since I also do a good preliminary cleaning of it that leaves the machine ready to receive the new OS X without dragging errors or garbage from the previous version. Here are some previous steps for you to do before launching the update or installation from scratch of the new operating system.

disk-utility

Well, let's get down to business and start downloading the new OS X El Capitan operating system from the Mac App Store. Before swimming remember that they exist several fully valid methods to carry out an installation from scratch on our Mac but I personally always use the same one, the DiskMaker X tool. So if you want to follow this tutorial you have to go through the DiskMaker website and start with the download of this tool that is in beta phase (it always is after a launch) but that works perfectly with OS X El Capitan.

The installation process is the same as in previous versions, so if you have already done it, I am sure that it will be very easy to carry out. An important detail in these cases is that the installation is better done with the MacBook connected to the router via cable and at the same time connected to the electrical network.

Disk Utility

Format USB / SD

The first thing and if we want to advance work while downloading the new OS X El Capitan on our Mac, is to carry out a format of the USB or SD card 8GB or higher that we need for the clean installation of the operating system and for this we connect it to the Mac. The process is simple and we only have to enter Disk utility which is in the Others folder inside of the Launchpad. Once inside we select the USB / SD and press to erase, we add el Format: Mac OS Plus (Journaled) and we name it.

The USB or SD card will be completely erased, so be careful.

diskmaker-yosemite

DiskMakerX

Once our USB / SD is ready, the DiskMaker tool is ready and the OS X EL Capitan download is ready, we can start the process. With the USB / SD connected to the Mac, click on the DiskMaker X icon and on the option to install OS X Yosemite (we imagine El Capitan will appear soon) works fine and click on the previously made download of OS X El Capitan that will be in the applications folder.

We put the administrator password and click on continue. Now we have to wait for the installation process to finish in the 8GB USB / SD if it takes a little quiet, it is normal. In no case will we close the program, disconnect the USB / SD or turn off the equipment. Once finished we can start the installation process on our machine.

osx-el-captain-6

Installing OS X El Capitan

Once the DiskMaker X process is finished we can go to the installation on Mac. To begin the process is as simple as turning off the Mac with USB / SD connected and just at the moment of starting we hold down the Alt key To bring up the start menu, we select the USB memory or SD card where we have the OS X El Capitan installer.

Now it's our turn erase OS X Yosemite of our Mac and for it We select the Disk Utility option and delete our partition from the current OS X we leave her with el Format: Mac OS Plus (Journaled). We left Disk Utility and continued with the installation of OS X El Capitan.

Ready now we can enjoy the new OS X El Capitan!

Captain

Doubts about whether to install the operating system from scratch or not always appear before the launch of new versions and although it is true that it is not necessarily necessary to carry out a clean installation, it will always be good to do one from time to time for two reasons: The first is that it will prevent us from weighing down errors and possible failures of the previous operating system and the second is that we will lose the fear of carrying out a restoration of our Mac and we will realize that it is very simple even though it seems a complicated task. As long as we have a backup in the form of a backup of important files or documents, we will not have a problem of any kind.

Hi PB, if you format the disk and the Bootcamp partition is there, you lose it. But not everything is bad, Apple allows you to directly use the ISO image downloaded from Microsoft without using a USB. We will create a post about it.

    Hello Jordi,
Question, those of us who have been following the os x Capitan beta program, we have version 10.11.1 installed, do you think it is advisable to install the version that Apple released yesterday (10.11)?
I understand that 10.11.1 is more advanced than 10.11, it confuses me that Apple released something more late than what we are testing, knowing that there were some bugs in 10.11 that I suppose they have corrected.
    Thank you

         Jordi Giménez said

      Good Santiago,

The main problem that I see in what you tell me is that you are using a beta version as the main operating system. This can cause problems but each one ...

Obviously OS X 10.11.1 is superior to the version released yesterday, but it is still a beta and I do not know to what extent it is advisable to work with it. I follow the natural course of updates and I use beta ones on partitions or disks outside of the main operating system, which is the one that really works.

    Hello, how about this way:

I download and install the update and after that I just reboot to go to the start menu.

I format the hard drive, I return to the start menu and start the installation, is this correct?

    Thank you.

         Jordi Giménez said

If you format once El Capitan is installed, you will lose the El Capitan installer and you will not be able to install it again.

           Jonathan M. said

But I mean to upgrade and then install from scratch.

That is to say, what I am looking for is that from the start menu I can choose to install El Capitan because it currently gives me the Yosemite option.

      Good Gorka,

yes of course it works! Think that all the caches, remains of applications, programs and other 'things' that you have saved without realizing it in the version of Yosemite will be eliminated if you do a clean installation.

Loading the backup are only applications, passwords, contacts, emails and other data that do not pose a problem for your Mac.

if you have a backup you don't have to fear anything. I do not understand what to modify the date and time of Terminal ... When you say that you made a USB with the installer and the same thing comes out, do you mean that when you download it gives you an error? that does not download well? It certainly seems like a download problem to me and I would try to download it again and follow the tutorial process.

Hello Jordi, if I have a backup copy, I found the modification of the date and time in Google looking for the same cases as the one that is happening to me and in several sites they mention that it is solved by entering the terminal and correcting the date and time that works with that , but in my case it has not worked, in other sites they say that I should repair the disk from disk utilities and I also did it and it has not worked, in other sites where the same thing happened they say to reset the pram I have already done it and not I can still install it, with the usb I have the installer but it says the same when installing it, just as if I downloaded it again with the AppStore, all this happens to me when I want to update the truth I do not want to install it from scratch, in fact the last thing that I did was reinstall the Yosemite because in a website they mentioned that this error was perhaps because some operating system file was damaged, but the installation was not solved, it will be then that the application that does not download wellMy internet is very slow or is it disconnected a lot and I don't realize it? Will I have to download it from another place with faster internet? And i don't know what to do thanks

         Jordi Giménez said

Well, I could not tell you Mario but it may be that he did not download the system well and therefore gives you a problem. Although your download speed is slow, it would have nothing to do with the operation of El Capitan.

Previously to this machine I updated from Yosemite to El Capitan and it began to fail, it loaded the system but it did not start, it was left with the screen prior to starting the desktop, with the reissue of colors and from there it did not happen; I read on the internet that there was a risk of this problem if it was updated instead of installing the system from scratch, but now that I have done it, I have not succeeded either.
    Anyone who can help me?

      Hello Pepe,

Before starting the process, clean your Mac a bit and perform a disk repair and verification. That may fix the problem.

Hello, I have a similar problem, a few days ago I restored my MacBook Pro mid 2012 with the new operating system OS X the captain, unfortunately my machine got too slow, I am used to it being fast and powerful, searching in Spotlight became a nightmare, saving pdfs the same, I dedicate myself to audiovisual arts and when using the adobe suite I wanted to throw my machine away, when saving a document in Illustrator it took more than a minute to save it and so continuously, I have had enough and went back to install OS X yosemite on my computer, I hope that if the same thing happened to me, he would let me know if he could repair it and explain to me how to do it, meanwhile I will continue using Yosemite because it swims very well. Is it necessary to update to the new operating system? I don't feel a big difference, quite the opposite.
    Greetings.

Hello, it happens to me like many of you. I have installed Capital as an update, but when I turn off the computer and restart, the blank screen appears with the apple and a bar below that does not move and takes hours. I reinstall everything with Cmd + R and it continues to happen the same, reinstall the first update of El Capital and the same. I have tried disabling the security SIP and the same. I don't know what to do without going through clean copy and Time Machine. Any idea why this is happening? do you have to disable any antivirus or vuze or even Java program? Thank you.

Hi! How are you??? What a good page ,,, a question ... I installed the captain without seeing anything before, now my computer is stuck because I cannot install the captain because it tells me that I do not have enough memory, and I cannot access the disk to erase some things that could erase. I put an external disk and it won't let me either. How can I solve this? please thanks…

If when starting it allows you to reinstall, do it and restart the process again, it is the only thing that occurs to me.

Hello, your advice is very good. My problem is the following, since I upgrade to Captain I cannot record on my external hard drive, I have purchased the tuxera ntfs program, which worked well, now I don't know what happens, the same thing happens on my two macbooks.

         Jordi Giménez said

Hi Hector, the problem may be directly with the Tuxera software and I don't use it ... Let's wait and see if someone tells you what it might be or get in touch directly with the tool's developers to see if they have more cases of incompatibility.

      Greetings and tell us.

Hello, I was updating to El Capitan, when the computer emitted a beep (which I don't know if it's normal) and it restarted. The little apple came out in gray on a white background, and the time bar, but now there is only the blank screen and the cursor over it. There is nothing else. It takes like half an hour. Do you know if it is normal? Or how could I fix it? Thanks in advance

         Jordi Giménez said

Hi Lola, I would try to install the system again in your place. The beep thing may be something related to RAM. You already tell us.

Hi, thanks for the tutorial. I had a problem and when installing the captain on my imac fusion drive Mac it has unmounted, and now the normal hard disk and the SSD appear separately. I have tried to fix it via terminal but it fails when merging both disks.

Any idea what I can do?

    Thank you so much!!

Success!!! I have updated a MacBook Air from May 2015 with Yosemite without problems, as I want to sell the computer and I want it to be clean of confidential data. As installation data, I will add the following: 1.- When the installation from the USB is finished, it remains stopped on the screen "one second left", for 15 minutes. 2.- Then it remains stopped on the screen «0 seconds left», for 2 minutes. 3.- Then the computer restarts by itself, and displays the screen with «the apple», and a message «Installing: Approximately 20 minutes left» (which actually takes 40 minutes). 4.- When the above ends, it restarts again a couple of times with the apple on the screen, and finally the Welcome page appears to configure (as if you had just bought the computer). Regarding selling it, who is interested, let me know, because the computer has a guarantee and everything is original, box, invoice, etc., and I have only made 4 charges to the battery. This brand new and with «El Capitan» !!! I am in Valencia. Price to be negotiated.

      jesus hs said

It was already sold. By the way: The computer was going super-fast, with this new operating system. My computer met all the requirements for installation, since it was only a few months old since I bought it. I say (I don't know) that many of the problems presented here could be due to not meeting the minimum requirements for installation? (I don't know, it's my saying only). Thanks for the publication of this page, Jordi. It helped me a lot. Greetings.

          Hi Fito,

Well, if you managed to install this software on another machine, that's fine, so you shouldn't have a problem installing it on other Macs. In my case, I did the installation on several Macs with a USB and it always worked fine. If it doesn't work, go back to the OS X download process and create a new USB bootable

Good night Jordi, I made a format to my macbook with El Capitan, because I have errors and I have been trying to install it for more than a month but it does not finish downloading, there are times that it takes 20 minutes to download the os x and from there it commands to download it from the app store. Logico right now there are no applications because the operating system is not installed. I have the maverick on an external hard drive and I don't see how to install it. I wait your answer.

      Good morning Jovanny,

Did you format before downloading the system? Which system are you on now?

If you have bootable mavericks you can install it directly by following the steps in this tutorial but using Mavericks, it is the same.

Hi, I directly upgraded from applestore to ElCapitan (my macbookpro had 10.6.8 and meets the requirements). However, two minutes after finishing the installation, a black screen appears with all kinds of error logs. Gives the option to reinstall, save logs, or shutdown. I restarted installation up to six times with the same result. You want to make a bootable usb to do a clean install. I have another mac (also 10.6.8) in which I try to do the usb installer but Terminal gives me an error (and Diskmaker does not exist for this OS) ... any creative solution?

    Greetings.

I am a user of OS X 10.6.8 and my intention is to upgrade to OS X 10.11.5
Before starting I leave the data of my team so that they have a better concept, it is a MacBook of 13 »at 2GHz Intel Core 2 Duo with 8Gb DDR3 and the model is A1278.
Well, in the AppStore it suggested I do the update by downloading it and I did so: I downloaded it and in the update process it always gave me errors and errors. I assumed that the installer did not download properly. I tried to make a bootable USB (using Disk Utility in Snow Leopard) following the steps in detail (I was based on a tutorial for Mavericks) and when trying to install again the error: "fails to extract files from the essentials.pkg package".

What I'm doing now is downloading OS X 10.9 (Mavericks) to update and then starting to install OS X 10.11
My question is: Is there something I am doing wrong in updating from 10.6.8 to 10.11.5? Can I use a program similar to DiskMaker or similar but in Snow Leopard?

         Jordi Giménez said

      Good Erykco,
the important thing is the year of that MacBook, but come on, if your Mac is compatible https://www.soydemac.com/estos-son-los-mac-compatibles-con-os-x-el-capitan/ you will have no problem updating.

On the other hand, did you change the RAM to the Mac? some older Mac users have had trouble installing because of it

      you already tell us

I already went down El Capitan again and it gave me the same error. I meet all the requirements, install from scratch and nothing .... now I recovered an old version of Leopard 10.6.8 and my computer is half broken ... ..App Store does not let me download El Capitan again (account error that says how bad this open when it is) nor can I run half of the programs because they were in a more modern version of OS X. What do I do? I also can't use Disk Maker X to create a bootable YSB with El Capitan because Disk Maker doesn't run with this old version of OS X ... so I'm in a dead end… .AYUUUUUDA !!

Hello, my problem is that I bought a Kingston UV300 SSD to change the HD that it had by default. I have a 2010-inch MacBook Pro mid 13 and the problem is when I go to install the OS X it remains 13 minutes before the installation and from there it does not happen, I already left it overnight and continued in the same way. I also clone the disk with Carbon Copy Cloner and when Booting everything works fine, but once it is installed on the machine it stays loading forever and does not enter the system. I hope that this can help me and excuse me if I lengthen but I do not know what to do. Thanks and good day.

         Miguel Angel said

      Gabo,

Well that is precisely what happens, the copy is damaged, you should try to download it again or look for it elsewhere. The download online must have something I do not know if with the country from which you downloaded it and where you registered the Mac or where you bought it, the thing is that I also went crazy with that, I downloaded 20 times, I tried to install it a thousand ways and nothing was not sanctioned, until I chose to buy a bootable usb with El Capitan online (ebay) and everything solved.
