Surely those of you who were born in this century already think that the video games that are available today have everything you could wish for. It is likely that this is the case, but those of us who were born much earlier think that yes, that they are very, very good, but it does not have the charm that the games of the 80s or early XNUMXs had, especially those of classic consoles like SEGAs waves Nintendo. Luckily, today we also have available emulators to play those titles on the latest devices, such as an iPhone or an iPad.
The problem is that Apple does not like to accept in its application stores apps that, well, that are not exactly as they want. That means there are a lot of great apps out there and not so great ones don't make it into the App Store, but it also means that emulators aren't welcome there. For that reason, if we want to use some emulators we will have to do it unofficially, such as from a jailbroken device. In this article we will show you how to play classic Nintendo titles on your iPhone with iOS 8 without jailbreak.
Nintendo games on iOS 8 without jailbreak
First of all I would like to explain that in order to use this method you have to use the date trick. We will explain it in more detail below, but not without first warning that Apple closed this bug a long time ago, so it will only be available in iOS 8 (not all) and earlier. If you use a more current version, this trick will not work for you. It involves doing the following:
- We open the settings of the iPhone / iPod Touch or iPad.
- We go to General / Date and Time.
- Then we deactivate the automatic adjustment to be able to take the next step.
- Now we have to change the date and set it to August 8, 2014. Yes, you will have to slide a while until you reach that date.
- Now we open the Safari and access THIS LINK, all from the iOS device.
- On the previous website, which is about iEmulators, we have many applications available that we will not find in the App Store. We have to look for SiOS, although there is another option that can also work called Provenance (which also allows playing SEGA titles).
- We enter the section of the app and inside we touch on «Install».
- A pop-up will appear and we have to accept the installation.
- Once the emulator installation finishes, we can put the date back as we had it. If we see an error message, we tap on "Retry" to try again.
How long will I be able to play these emulators?
I do not know if you have asked yourself this question or if you have encountered the problem that an emulator closes as soon as you open it. If it happens to you, you just have to be patient. Those who upload these emulators and Apple are always playing cat and mouse: while some sign the emulators with a corporate certificate and upload it so that it can be installed by any user with or without jailbreak, Apple searches and revokes them just find them. When the certificate is revoked, the application can no longer be opened.
On the same page of iEmulators they usually put information about the status of an emulator's certificate. If it is revoked, we won't be able to use it until they re-upload a version with a valid certificate. As I mentioned earlier, you have to be patient.
Installing emulators with Xcode
If you have arrived here after the release of iOS 9, you also have to know that emulators can be installed with the Apple tool Xcode. Xcode is the tool to create software for macOS, iOS, tvOS and watchOS and from it we can sign the emulators ourselves and use them. Here we explain how:
- If we had not done it before, we will have to add our free developer account to Xcode. We go to Preferences/Accounts and add it. If you don't know how to create the developer account, here you have more information. Don't worry about the price because for this it is only necessary that our account be registered as a developer, but the free version.
- Next we will need the URL of the project. This URL is usually from GitHub and each emulator has a link to the GitHub project, where we will find the URL that interests us. In this step we will have to access the project.
- Next, we select the URL that interests us, which is the one you have marked in the screenshot.
- Now let's Source Control/Checkout.
- We wait for the project to download.
- In the next window, if there is a «master» option, we choose it and click Next. If we don't have this option, we select any other and test.
- After a while, which can be long, we have to repair some problems that usually always appear, but first we select our device from the upper left panel.
- In the name of the indicator, we change what is between "com" and the name of the application. Here there is usually a nick, so we put any other nickname. An example would be com.Aperricio.Yes.
- In the drop-down, we select our developer account.
- Finally, we click on the play button (the triangle pointing to the right) and wait for the application to install.
There is only one problem: the certificate stops working seven days later to be granted. Once that time has passed, the whole process has to be done again. The certificate was originally valid for three months, but Apple decided it was not a good deal for them and lowered it to one week.
Moreover, the paid developersThat is, those who can develop applications can sign the certificates and they will last a whole year. These developers pay an annual fee of € 99 and the best thing would be to be lucky enough to meet one of them and have any emulator or application not allowed in the App Store signed for us.
