Mavericks adoption continues to grow apace, but there are several users who are still on old OS X and do not know whether or not they can upgrade to Mavericks. The main problem once verified that they can update is to find the version of OS X Snow Leopard, which is the minimum OS X and necessary requirement to install OS X Mavericks but finding it is easier than it seems.
The first thing we are going to do is leave a complete list of Mac models that can be updated to OS X Mavericks and then we will see the necessary steps to update. We have already seen this in previous articles, but today we will clarify it again and we hope that all the doubts that you send us to the mail about how to upgrade from an old version of OS X, are resolved.
Check if our Mac is compatible with OS X Mavericks
The list is long and it is almost certainly our Mac appears in those that can be updated, but it is always better to make sure before taking any step. This appears on the Apple website and is the following:
- iMac (Mid 2007 or later)
- MacBook (late 2008 or early 2009 aluminum model or later)
- MacBook Pro (mid / late 2007 or later)
- MacBook Air (late 2008 or later)
- Mac mini (early 2009 or later)
- Mac Pro (early 2008 or later)
- Xserve (early 2009
The next step is to see the version of OS X that we have on our Mac
The OS X version of your Mac is in the About this Mac window, click on More information and just below the serial number we find the version of the operating system, it can be accessed from the menú menu in the menu bar. You can upgrade to OS X Mavericks from: Snow Leopard (10.6.8), Lion (10.7) and Mountain Lion (10.8) but if you have a version prior to Snow Leopard 10.6 You must first upgrade to OS X Snow Leopard in order to install OS X Mavericks.
For this we only have to buy the version of OS X Snow Leopard which is only available for purchase from the Mac App Store and which has un price of 18 euros in Spain and 19,99 dollars in the United States.
Install OS X Mavericks on our Mac
Once these steps have been carried out, there is only first install Snow Leopard on our machine and after everything is installed open the Mac App Store and download OS X Mavericks this time for free and install it on the Mac. Come on, that the key step for those who are in old versions of OS X is to find and upgrade to Snow Leopard first.
«..But if you have a version prior to Snow Leopard 10.7 you have to update to OS X first ...»
Snow Leopard is version 10.6
What about the case of users who cannot update that could only reach snow leopard and lion 🙁
Hi, I have a question. They just sold me a macbook, Mac OS X version 10.5.2, but I can't update it by clicking on "Software update", I assume it's an old version, in any case, do I have to buy a new version? and what would it be to properly update the operating system?
I would be very grateful if you could guide me. 🙂
Hello Mss M, your OS X is Leopard and you have a later version to update http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1141?viewlocale=es_ES although you can skip the step and buy Snow Leopard as I explain in the article, to update. First check that your MacBook is compatible with Mavericks, in the list above.
regards

Hi Iker, is the Mavericks bootable is original? ie not downloaded from the net? If the answer is yes, it's official, I think the problem you have is that you need to install OS X Mountain Lion first and then Mavericks.
You already tell us, Greetings

Hello Jordi, I just bought a mac with lion 10.7.5 core 2 duo and 2gb in ram. Please give me a link to update it with a light version, which allows me to download other new applications. Thanks 😉
Dear Jordi, in Mexico they sell the snow leopard on disk or USB. But they say that they are buteable, if you recommend them, or if you buy the leopard and all the ones that follow are downloaded without problem or you have to put more capacity I have Iba Imac 2007 with 2gb of 250gb.
Hello, I have an Imac G5 with 10.4.11 coreduo they tell me out there that it could go up to 10.5.8 or even 10.6.xx but I don't know how .. any ideas? Thank you. I have a macbook with 10.8.5 could I dump it?
It is impossible to update from Snow Leopard Mavericks ... Basically because that version of IOS has disappeared from the Apple Store, and when trying to update to MACOS Sierra it tells you that it can only be done from Mountain Lion or later and none are available in the Apple Store ... it seems like a global gaffe by Apple ... yet another
What Apple wants is for us to buy a new computer to continue working.
