Apple wants the 3D Flyover view feature in Maps to be the star feature of your mapping service against competitors such as the almighty Google Maps, which currently continues to hold the crown for the most complete map service. However with these updates, Apple is getting closer and closer to Google Maps in terms of functionality and features even though it is still far away.
After 20 new locations were recently added ahead of iOS 9's debut this month, Apple is adding as many this week for keep nurturing your Flyover 3D service on both iOS and OS X. The locations are as follows:
- Angers, France
- Carcassonne, france
- Florence, Italy
- Genoa, Italy
- Gold Coast, Australia
- Lugo, Spain
- Mannheim, Germany
- Mexicali, Mexico
- Murcia, Spain
- Nagasaki, Japan
- Neuschwanstein Castle, Germany
- Oklahoma City, Oklahoma
- Parma, Italy
- Pavia, Italy
- Sanremo, Italy
- Shizuoka, Japan
- St. Louis, Missouri
- Stuttgart, Germany
- Tijuana, Mexico
To achieve this 3D effect, the application superimpose high resolution images on 3d digital models of all the structures, monuments and different buildings of a given location. It also includes the possibility of navigating by car or route on foot to a specific destination and with OS X 10.11 also directions to move by public transport (bus, metro, train and other services), anyway for the moment you will only be alone in the US in certain cities, so I hope that within a few months it will also be added as an option in our country.
Even if we look to the near future, Apple has long been taking images of different neighborhoods and locations with vans that map the different locations with real photographs to supposedly offer a service that competes with Google Street View.
