Apple has improved its Messages app with the latest versions of the iPhone and iPad operating systems. There are a number of new features within the Messages app, one of which is called Check In. This feature is designed to provide a convenient way to tell your loved ones that you have arrived safely at your destination.

What is Apple Check In?
Check-in is a feature of Apple's Messages app for iPhone users. It allows you to notify selected contacts when you arrive safely at your destination. The feature automatically detects arrival and can share your location, route, battery level and signal strength with your contacts, depending on what you have chosen to share. With seamless integration into iMessage, Check In offers peace of mind when sharing encrypted information and means You don't have to remember to send a message when you get home, It's all automatic.
When you submit a Check In, you'll be able to choose whether you're driving, walking, or taking public transportation to get to your destination, and you can also choose to add time, whether it's an additional 15 minutes, 30 minutes, or 1 hour. If you encounter heavy traffic, or there is a problem with the trains, Check In will know and automatically update your arrival time. However, if something doesn't seem right, the feature will ask you to confirm that you're okay.
If you don't respond within 15 minutes, registration will alert the contact you've chosen to start a registration with. The log feature also supports live activities, so when you've sent a log to a contact, it will appear on their iPhone home screen so they can track your progress.

How does registration work?
Apple released Check In with iOS 17 on September 18, 2023. And here's how registration works and what you need to do to set it up:
- First open the Messages app on your iPhone
- Select the conversation with the person you want to notify when you get home.
- Tap the + (plus) button to the left of the text field
- Choose more that is located below the window.
- Select Check In from the menu (Arrival Notice)
- If this is the first time you're using the feature with that contact, tap Continue
- You'll need to tap Continue again to allow your iPhone to ask you if you're not progressing toward your destination
- Entonces you will have to choose between sharing “reduced” or “full” data if you don't reach your destination
- Select "Send an arrival notification session."
- Tap Edit in the yellow box that appears in the Messages entry field
- Choose between "Arriving" o «With timer» and set a destination or select
- Also choose between transfer options, "By car", "By transport" or "On foot".
- Select OK at the top right
- Press the blue arrow to send the registration message
For the When I arrive option, your iPhone will estimate your arrival time based on your current location and provide you with an option to edit it if necessary. For example, if you're going home after dinner, but plan to stop by the store on the way back, you can add 10 minutes or so.
In addition to this, If your plans change during the trip, you can adjust your arrival time planned. Once you arrive at your destination, your contacts will receive a notification confirming your safe arrival. For the After with a timer option, simply choose a time, either 5 minutes or 1 hour, and your contact will be alerted.
What information will contacts see if you don't arrive?
If you do not arrive at your destination within the expected period and do not disable registration, the information that your chosen contact will see It depends on whether you have chosen to share full or limited data. I recommend choosing to share full data if it is a trusted contact you are sharing the information with, as the contact will see your full route if it does not reach its destination, which could be very useful.
Full data shares details of battery, network signal, route traveled, and location of last iPhone unlock or Apple Watch removal. Additionally, Apple said that this information is encrypted.
When will a contact be notified with Check In?
Firstly, They will be notified when you submit check-in, your destination, and your estimated time of arrival. They will then be automatically notified when you have arrived at your destination, and check-in will be completed.
If you are late or do not respond within 15 minutes of being notified, your contact will be notified. Lastly, your contact will receive a notification if your iPhone is offline for an extended period of time.
Does check-in share your location in real time?
No, Check In does not share your location in real time. Only notify your chosen contacts when you arrive at your destination or if your progress seems abnormal. If you want to share your location in real time, you can use sharing features, which is another different option available to you on your iPhone.
