Can I upgrade my Mac to macOS Sierra from an old OS X?

This is another one of those questions that we usually get on days like this when the Mac operating system update is available or close to being available. The truth is that it is repeated every time we have a new release of OS X or in this case macOS and therefore we want to clarify this question a bit. Can I upgrade my Mac to macOS Sierra from an old OS X? if you can But you have to take into account a series of factors and that is that not all Macs are compatible with this new macOS Sierra and not all operating systems are capable of making the jump directly to the new one, so we go by parts.

If you are one of those who have a Mac on OS X Leopard, you have to upgrade to OS X Snow Leopard before you can install the new macOS Sierra operating system. This is the worst version available to update the Mac if it is compatible and we do not say it because of the operating system itself, we say it because need to buy OS X Snow Leopard in the Apple Online Store to be able to carry out this jump in the system. As you have well deduced after reading this paragraph, previous OS X to Leopard are not compatible with this update and what they indicate as a requirement to update is that you can update directly to macOS Sierra from OS X Lion 10.7.5 or later .

If you have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 and your Mac is compatible With this new version of macOS Sierra 10.12, you must first update to OS X El Capitan in order to carry out the system update. The truth is that in this case the step is simple and we only need to access the apple website where we will find the download link for OS X El Capitan.

From Yosemite can you jump to macOS Sierra? A greeting.

      Good night shiryu222,

I personally can't confirm it because it was in El Capitan, but you don't have to have a problem with it.

      regards

I imagined that I shouldn't have a problem, but I'm still going to wait to see what people say, and well, there is some program that I use that you have to remove SIP for it to work and that's what bothers me a bit, having to do that… Thank you.

I have OS X 10.6.8, as I understand I have to go to OS X El Capitan first, however I can't find the link to download El Capitan on Apple's website

I do not understand that, with so much policy of sustainability and image washing as a "sustainable company" that prevails in the world, a software development is not IMPOSED on companies that DOES NOT FORCE to buy new computers (phones) to be able to update operating systems or develop new applications appearing on the market.

What good is the durability of a computer if, in the long run, new operating systems / applications will force me to buy a new one?

Well said…. it is exact and precise…. unfortunately nobody says anything ... and so it will continue .... the new world order puts it that way …… more and more dependent on the system… .. powerful companies rule the planet… and governments are only executors… .. and they will see only those who are in power…. and they will not do anything for the people …….

Here I found some download links but I still don't know how to install it because when I download it it tells me that it is necessary to transfer it to a dvd, and I do not have a 5.4 gb dvd, which is what the captain weighs, the serious question can the captain install from a usb and how to do it? any page where they explain it?

I understand your quarrel that upgrades eventually cause us hardware problems. The concrete thing is that technology is in constant development to improve and often to simplify things. These technologies develop increasingly powerful computers with operating systems that require matching hardware.
I feel like updating our old devices with new operating systems is like putting a next-generation engine in an old car. Most likely it will end up giving us problems.
My MacBook Air is from 2011, it has the original operating system and I never had a problem, even the battery still performs well.
Conclusion: if your device works well, why touch it? And if you're tired of it, save up for a new one.

The problem arises when you install a program and it tells you "This application requires OS X 10.10 or later." It happened to me with Sketchup (design) and I have OS X 10.9.5 and I cannot update because my computer does not have the basic requirements. Bad for Mac.
