Apple buys rights to Will Smith's film "Emancipation"

Emancipation tells the story of a slave who flees the Confederacy in the midst of the American Civil War, traveling north to join the Union Army. This movie will be directed by Antoine Fuqua, director of films such as Training Day and The Protector (The Equalizer), both films starring Denzel Washington.

The purchase of this movie by Apple is described as the Largest Festival Acquisition Deal in Film History. Several were the bidders who were interested in the film that was presented in the Cannes Virtual Film Market that was held at the end of June, replacing the usual contest that was not held due to the coronavirus.

Apple could have paid $ 120 million for the film that will be released in theaters and later will end up in Apple's streaming video catalog. Production of the film is scheduled for 2021 and its release is scheduled for the end of that year.
