What do you commit to by accepting the El Capitan software license agreement?

license contract OSX el capitan

Like many people, I didn't even bother to read the legal gibberish in the OSX El Capitan software license agreements, and with an 'Accept' I finished. Robb Schecter attorney and developer, sat down patiently to read the 'El Capitan' license agreement, then explained the limitations it contains so you don't have to. You do not own 'El Capitan' when you download a copy of the operating system from the Mac App Store, it actually you are borrowing the operating system from Apple. This should come as no surprise, as this is how software has been distributed for decades. But I don't think many people are aware of the limitations of El Capitan, such as those related to virtualization, business use, and much more.

I should point out that I am a lawyer with a good understanding of licenses, trademarks and copyrights. I am also a software developer with 20 years of experience. So I broke down the license to see what this contract was made of. Robb Schecter.

Within the most important We highlight these 9:

  • Apple did not sell you this software. It's still yours, in fact you're just borrowing it, just like any other Apple software.
  • You can use 'El Capitan' on two virtual machines, and on one computer, but these virtual machines cannot be used for business (unless you are a developer).
  • The fonts that come with 'El Capitan' are also loaned to you, you do not own them.
  • You are not allowed to remix the clock sounds.
  • The slide shows made with the 'Photos' application cannot be used for commercial purposes.
  • You cannot use 'El Capitan' with anyone's illegal copies.
  • Running 'El Capitan' on Hackintosh, and non-Apple hardware, is totally illegal.
  • You must not operate a nuclear power plant with 'El Capitan', or send the software to Sudan.
  • The use of MPEG / H.264 / AVC videos created on your Mac for commercial purposes requires additional licenses for encryption.

Clearly Apple is no different than everyone else when it comes to software licensing. And like most other companies, Apple is bound by these legal agreements, so every word that is chosen, is done carefully to limit liability as much as possible. The terms and conditions of Apple's license agreements can be found here. The full text of the final license agreement for 'El Capitan' is available on Apple's website in the form of a PDF document.

Hi Francisco, one question, did you update from the Mac App Store, or did you install from scratch?
